FAQ
Q: Do coloured gemstones require special care or maintenance?
Yes, coloured gemstones require special care based on their hardness. Ruby is exceptionally durable (9 on the Mohs scale), while aquamarine (7.5–8), morganite (7.5–8), and emerald (7.5–8) are more prone to scratches or damage.
Emeralds, in particular, have natural inclusions that make them more fragile. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and hard knocks, and clean gently with mild soap and water. Regular professional check-ups help maintain their beauty and longevity.
Q: Will my gemstone look dull over time?
Lotions, soaps, and everyday grime can create a film under your gemstone, reducing its brilliance. Regular cleaning with mild soap and warm water will help maintain its sparkle.
This is more noticeable especially on pastel coloured stones like aquamarine and morganite, but as we offer unlimited complimentary clean for all our rings and also yearly service, this will help maintain the sparkle.
Q: Australian Opal Engagement Ring: Pros & Cons
Pros:
✔ Exceptional Beauty – Opals are renowned for their intense play-of-color, often featuring rare and vibrant hues.
✔ Unique & Rare – Mined exclusively in Australia, these opals are highly sought after and add exclusivity to an engagement ring.
✔ Symbolic & Meaningful – Opals represent love, creativity, and individuality, making them a deeply personal choice.
Cons:
✖ Delicate (5.5–6.5 Mohs) – Softer than most gemstones, opals can scratch, chip, or crack if not handled carefully.
✖ Requires Gentle Care – Sensitive to heat, chemicals, and some to sudden temperature changes, which can cause crazing (tiny cracks).
✖ May Require a Protective Setting – To enhance durability, bezel settings or protective designs (with border of diamonds) are often recommended.
Opals create stunning, one-of-a-kind engagement rings but require mindful wear and special care to maintain their beauty over time.
Q: Do coloured gemstones need to be re-polished over time?
Most softer gemstones may develop surface wear over time.
The longevity of a coloured gemstone’s brilliance depends on the wearer’s lifestyle, as scuffing and surface wear occur naturally over time. Activities like outdoor sports, gym workouts, and heavy lifting can expose the stone to knocks and abrasion. Removing your ring during these activities will help preserve its beauty for years to come.
We offer professional re-polishing, where we remove the stone, which is repolished by our gem cutter and we then reset the stone back into the ring. If the damage is too large, new stone may be the only option.
